Rainbow Snippets: A Marriage for Three

For this week’s Rainbow Snippet, I thought I’d choose six lines from my story A Marriage for Three which I can’t believe is one year old this month! A Marriage for Three, along with my other titles is included in the Labor Day Weekend 40% ebook sale at JMS Books until Monday.

Authors who take part in Rainbow Snippets each weekend are encouraged to post a few lines from one of their stories on their blog and then link back to the group post on Facebook. I always enjoy joining in with Rainbow Snippets, especially to read and comment on everyone else’s choice of snippet.

This Regency story is set in rural England and from the point of view of Charlotte Grenville, a young woman providing for her widowed mother and younger siblings by working as a ladies’ companion. When it is clear the family can no longer make ends meet, Anthony Wallace, a close family friend, proposes marriage as a way to solve their problems.

Lottie realises this is a purely practical and financial arrangement, since Anthony, who she has known from childhood as her older brother’s best friend, is involved in a devoted relationship with his steward, Simon Walker. When family circumstances make it impossible for her to refuse Anthony’s offer, Lottie reluctantly accepts.

In this snippet, some weeks before the wedding, Lottie and Simon are conversing alone, skirting delicately around the edges of their new situation…

Simon stopped and looked down at her. He smiled, his deep brown eyes full of appreciation. “You are an admirable woman, Miss Grenville,” he said and, taking her hand, kissed it lightly through her glove.

They turned and walked back through the pasture and down the hill, chatting about commonplace matters. Charlotte tried not to rub her hand that still tingled from the touch of Simon’s mouth through the thin fabric. She felt a frisson of guilt, unfaithfulness even, as she tried to quash the sudden flare of attraction.
