Rainbow Snippets: Another Roll of the Dice

For this weekend’s Rainbow Snippets, I’m snippeting again from my under 5k-word story A Roll of the Dice. This story is set in the clubland of 18th-century London and recently celebrated its 2nd bookversary.

Talking of celebrations, my publisher JMS Books has its 13th anniversary this weekend with a 50% off ebook sale until Monday, July 31st. This sale includes A Roll of the Dice and all my titles plus my prelease for Town Bronze, a new Regency romp coming out in August.

Authors who take part in Rainbow Snippets each weekend are encouraged to post a few lines from one of their stories on their blog and then link back to the group post on Facebook. I always enjoy joining in with Rainbow Snippets, especially to read and comment on everyone else’s choice of snippet.

Last week’s snippet revealed the seduction of my MC aspiring artist and man of colour Joshua Jones by older diplomat Frank Bartlett. They met at the high-stakes gambling club, managed by Joshua’s uncle where Joshua works as a waiter to fund his studies. This week’s six lines are less action-packed and more reflective as their affair continues…

As Joshua drew the strong lines of his lover’s face in the chilly dawn, he warmed at the thought of their nights together. From being a man in total control; powerful, connected, wealthy, in Joshua’s arms, he was his equal, pleading for the total surrender that only Joshua could give him. At least for the moment, Joshua thought with a chink of caution. Uncle Samuel had not interfered with this budding relationship but merely warned him that after the Season, like most of the gentry, Frank would leave London before the summer.

But we have now, Joshua thought, his hand hesitating on the page, and that has to be enough for me.
